Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic film scripted and directed by prolific film director James Cameron. Having been possibly inspired by Hindu mythology, Cameron has also decided to make the aliens blue. The action of the film takes place in 2154. It touches upon the ever-lasting human vices: greed, immaturity and violence that results from ignorance. The story revolves around a soldier - Jack - who arrives in Pandora the moon situated in the Alpha Centauri star system to help The Corporation that wants to mine and export unobtainium - a precious mineral. The Na'vi are the alien sentient humonoid civilization living and thriving on Pandora. They are a part of a vast symbiotic living system that comprises both plants and animals which are all connected by a biological interaction network. The Corporation wants to mine the planet and the Na'vi fight against the conquerors for their fatherland. The expansion and growth of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of the local tribe. When on a mission, Jake is taken in by the Na'vi and explores their habitat, culture and language. Natirii, the female Na'vi he meets, helps him through this trip. Jake falls in love with her. Avatars are biological creatures - a combination of human and alien DNA. They are controlled by a human from whose DNA they were made. The soldier takes control of an avatar made from his brother's DNA. Avatar draws a picture of an ideal world. The ending is particularly moving. The visual effects are captivating. The alien world Cameron and his team demonstrate to viewers is one of the most thought-out and consistent. The movie is worth watching. |
