A Current Account: Basic Information

A current account is a bank account which allows bank clients to make a deposit and take it out from a bank account at any time. Different banks use different definitions for a current account, but in general a current account holder can pay off debts using personal checks instead of cash. Cash machine cards and debit cards can also be used to access an account or withdraw cash. Virtually every bank offers some type of current account service for their customers. Some may require a minimal initial deposit before opening a new account, along with proof of identification and address. A student or other low-income applicant may decide on a no-frills current account where personal cheques and other services are free. Other clients may benefit from interest payments, provided they sustain a high minimal balance each month. Commonly, a current account is managed through thorough posting of debits and credits. The account holder is supplied with official cheques with the essential routing and posting information. When a cheque is filled in correctly, the recipient treats it the same as cash and completes the transaction. After the recipient deposits the cheque into his or her bank account, a bank worker files the cheque electronically and the cheque writer's bank receives the cancelled cheque and amount to be debited from the cheque writer's account. Owners of current accounts are responsible for keeping track of their available funds, though the financial institution will regularly make its own accounting statements. Cheques must reflect an actual sum contained in the current account itself. If a cheque is written for an amount higher than the available funds, the cheque writer will be charged numerous fees. The recipient of the 'bad' cheque can demand prompt cash payment for the original debt as well as a substantial fee for the returned cheque. Some financial institutions will shield current account owners by making the proper payments and informing the cheque writer about the overdraft. Frequently the financial institution will recover their losses by charging for services provided, so it pays to avoid writing cheques when the balance is unknown. Most banks have several different techniques which allow current account customers to check their balances and reconcile their records. Monthly statements of withdrawals and credits are mailed to current account holders. Cash machines render an option to check the current balance, while phone-in or online accounts can provide real time updates on processed and still unpaid cheques.
